temperate forest

The soil in a temperate forest is rich in nutrients.

The average temperature for a year in the temperate forest is about 50 degrees F.

The forests usually gets about 30 to 60 inches of every year.

There are the small plants such as shrubs, moss, ferns, and lichens which grow quietly beneath the shadows of the tall trees.
The trees found in a temperate forest are called hardwoods. This means the trees loose their leaves in the winter. Their trunks are also made of a bark that is very hard.
Most of the trees are maple, birch, beech, oak, hickory, and sweet gum.

Australia is home to koalas, possum, kookaburras, wallabies, wombats and other kinds of marsupials. Giant and red pandas can be found in China's forest region. In Canada and the United States there are rabbits, bobcats, mountain lions, deer, bears and many species of birds - owls, cardinals, hawks and woodpeckers being the most common. But don't overlook the littlest residents in these areas as well. There are a great varieties of insects, slugs, salamanders, frogs and turtles.

Tundra

The Tundra has extremely low temperatures; The average winter temperature is -34° C (-30° F), but the average summer temperature is 3-12° C (37-54° F). It has little precipitation, and poor nutrients in the soil.

  • Plants are low shrubs, sedges, reindeer mosses, liverworts, grasses, 400 varieties of flowers, tussock grasses, dwarf trees, small-leafed shrubs, and heaths

  • Herbivorous mammals: lemmings, voles, caribou, arctic hares, squirrels, pikas, marmots, mountain goats, sheep, elk

  • Carnivorous mammals: arctic foxes, wolves, and polar bears

  • Canada, Russia and Scandinavia is where you will find the tundra

    grassland (full)

  •  The soil of the temperate grasslands is deep and dark.

  • Temperature Range: 31 °C (56°F).

  • Annual Precipitation: 81 cm. (32 in.).

  • Many animals roam the grasslands such as the elephant, lions, zebras, giraffe, black rhinoceros, mice, prairie dogs, and the little insect called the aphid.

Although shrubs and trees occur very rarely in this biome, there are several types of grasses that grow in the grassland biome, such as buffalo grass, ryegrass, foxtail, wild oats, and purple needlegrass

  • Global Position: western North America (Great Basin, Columbia Plateau, Great Plains); Eurasian interior.
